Showing up to work day in and day out can be daunting, especially when your cubicle mates are not your BFFs.  Try something new that will make your work area a little more calm and inviting place to be by creating a little island of you.

Your Island, Your Tribe

Think about the things that make you happy and bring joy to your life.  Try incorporating those into your workspace and get creative.  Think of what your island or city would look like if you designed everything.  Do you like bold colors or muted pastels?  Do you collect something that makes you smile?  Are there dream vacations you’ve been dying to take?  Stick with one theme and go to town!

Office decorated with plants

Plant and Grow

Have you always wanted a little succulent garden?  Incorporating plants and flowers into your area will bring some instant calm and relaxation.  Think about ways to add some green into your space and it will start looking like a lived in, welcome space.  Plants will also give you something to tend to while you are on that tedious weekly conference call you look forward to so much.

Design and Décor

Once you’ve established your theme, lean into decorative items that will sell your idea.  You want objects and elements that will bring a smile to your face, even on the most annoying of days.  Remember decorating your dorm in college?  This can be the same experience, but with a more discerning eye.  Though if string lights are your jam, then go for it!  These elements will also be great conversation starters for people passing by, breaking up the day little by little.

Sights, Sounds and Smells

Isn’t it the best feeling when you get a whiff of a good smell?  Without bothering your neighbors, think if there is a certain smell that brings you happiness and stock it on your island.  Maybe it’s a hand lotion you keep in your desk, or even a mini diffuser to keep the air light and fresh.  If you are allowed to use headphones at work, find a calming playlist or something that would go with your workspace theme. Create a whole experience.  Think about when you go to a spa – they create a whole experience by immersing you in the smells and sounds of relaxation.  These are just a few things you can do to cultivate a positive experience in your workplace.

Give your workspace an overhaul and try something new to break up the monotony.  It will give you something exciting to show up to work for and make it easier to take on whatever comes your way.
