Spending our days hunched over a computer at a desk ruins our posture. We all look like we are turning in hunchbacks. Getting a good routine can help prevent any more damage. Take a break from the computer and sitting and get some stretching in. Yoga can seem like a very overwhelming undertaking, and some of the positions impossible. Start slow and try on some of the proven yoga positions that can correct your posture.

Mountain Pose

It doesn’t get any easier than the Mountain Pose. If anyone spots you in the office doing this pose, it will just look like you are standing. But while you are just standing, you will be realigning yourself. Stand straight back, pulling your shoulder back into their proper place. Your tailbone slightly tucked in, and your feet planted hip-width apart. Do this for a few minutes during break or when taking a call and feel the difference. The best thing about this pose is that you can do it anywhere anytime. Train yourself to stand in this position.

Tree Pose

The Tree Pose is going to test your balance a little more. To accomplish this pose, you are forced to get into the correct posture. If not, you will fall. With your hands pressed together in front of your heart, pull your shoulders back to be in line with your hips and align your spine. Lift one foot and place the sole against your other leg. Start low, and as you can maintain your balance, move it higher. Hold this pose for a few minutes each time. The more you practice, the more comfortable and higher you will be able to move your foot’s position.

Yoga

Cat-Cow Pose

The Cat-Cow Pose involves you getting down on the floor. You may want to keep a mat in your office for times you need a stretch break. Once on all fours, make sure your hand and knees are directly under your shoulder and hips. Round your back up while inhaling, the cat part of the pose. Then exhale and arch your back inward, the cow part of the pose. Always return to the neutral position of keeping your back straight from shoulder to hip. You may want to close the blind for this one.

Cobra Pose

The Cobra Pose is another one that will take some practice, and get easier the more you do it. Laying on your stomach, place your hand directly under your shoulders. Push up and drive your shoulder back, arching your head back as well. Hold for five breaths, release, and then do it again. Your hunched shoulders will feel great after doing this for a few minutes. The goal is to have less and less pressure in your hands eventually. Meaning that you are also strengthening the muscle in your back while it is benefiting your posture.

Yoga doesn’t have to take place in a studio. Do it anywhere you can. It only takes minutes to help correct your posture.
