Getting to know those we work with is vital to having a good work environment. Some things should be shared, and then there are topics that you should steer clear of. Work friends are not like regular friends. If you misunderstand or end up in a fight, you still must see them the next day. It is best to keep it as professional as possible to keep your work relationships in good standing. Here are some topics to avoid.

Gossip

Gossip is never good. Whether you are the one spreading it or hearing, it will affect you negatively. Being the one spreading the negativity will give you a bad name and could get you excluded. No one wants their business to spread to others. Being a person that listens to gossip can affect the way you view your coworkers. Knowing information about others can change your view before you get to know them. Avoid all gossip to keep your work environment uplifting.

Quitting Plans

Talking about quitting is not something you should be spreading around the office. How many times do we say we want to leave when we know it will probably never happen because we need to make money? The talk of quitting will eventually get back to the boss and end up with them not thinking you are serious about your job. Along the same lines, don’t talk about the interview you are going on. It is best to keep plans to yourself until they are a reality.

Coworkers

Politics

Controversial topics can be tricky at any time, but they should not be spoken about in an office. The political climate that we are experiencing today is becoming more and more heated. Unneeded tension will be created when you encounter those on the other side of the issues. No matter how open-minded you feel, it is bound to affect your work environment and relationships. You don’t have to hide your opinions, but they don’t need to be openly discussed.

Religion

Religion and politics can go hand in hand. They both come down to our beliefs. Religion can be the most crucial aspect of a person’s life, and not even on another’s radar. Work is not the place to get into the meaning of life. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be allowed to have items in your personal work area that remind you of your beliefs. Remember that most aspects of our personal life should not be discussed in the office. It is not professional.

Unconstructive criticism

We are all going to receive feedback. It is an essential part of learning and perfecting our abilities in our job. Before giving any advice, make sure that you are the one that should be giving it. Are you that employee’s supervisor? If not, it is best to leave it to the employer. Any unwanted feedback could be seen in a negative light. Pick your words carefully when giving feedback. You don’t want to offend by mistake.
